Are Zernikes an optimal basis set for representing aberrations?
Porter, Guirao, Cox, Williams (JOSA A 2001)
Porter et al. find the Zernike fit is almost as good as a principal component fit for fitting 218 normal eyes.
Thus one might think that Zernike polynomials provide an excellent, compact basis set for describing aberrations.
Not true for describing anomalous eyes.
